Graniti Murales - Art Residency in Sicily

Feet Circle BW.jpg

This work in progress is located outside my studio at 1000 Parker Street. The style of this piece rests somewhere between Bauhaus and Gingerbread house.  I've been recording everything I' ve learned (the good, bad and ugly) about painting on century old walls - This building is an old matress factory that now houses over 180 studios and workshops. Hopefully some of the technical skills I am building will be of use in Sicily!

13 Feet Off The Ground

We are a collective of 13 Vancouver-based, female artists heading to Sicily for a 1 month Public Art residency with Graniti Murales. We are a diverse group with ages spannng 5 decades with painting practises the range from minimalist geoetric abstraction (that's me!) to maximalist figuration. Our mission is to literally paint the town! Each of us will be creating a mural using contemporary techniques on the ancient wall of this little town, nestled near the base of Mount Etna, Sicily's most formidable and active volcano.

References to my Mennonite Cultural History are imbedded in the quilt-like patterns I am building into this piece. Textiles are a new addition to my studio practise as well.
