My fascination with bridges began in 2006 while living in Istanbul, Turkey where a very modern "First Bridge" crosses the Bosphorous and takes you from Europe to Asia in a matter of minutes. Though technically you are still in the same ancient city, you soon realize that this bridge spans two very distinct continents, geographies and attitudes. I love the idea that this man made structure is responsible for opening my mind to new possibilities.
4 years after I returned to Vancouver, in 2013-2015, I had the opportunity to paint, en plein air, while on board the tugboat SS Master. The esteemed ship is docked, in the summer months, at Granville Island, between Burrard and Granville Bridges. My work produced during this mini residencies was featured in 2 group shows at the Vancouver Maritime Museum.
In recognition of the power that these geometric structures have to take me past land's end, I have continued with this series for 4 years now. It is the power of connection that keeps me fascinated.
